Today, on October 14, the opening of the 10th Tashkent International Biennale of Contemporary Art took place at the Central Exhibition Hall. The ceremony began with a choreographic performance, which, in combination with the installation, created a unique atmosphere where all the elements harmoniously complemented each other.
The exhibition featured paintings, installations, and video art by both local and international artists. Some works, due to their technique and compositional choices, are difficult to classify as contemporary art. Nevertheless, the exhibition as a whole offered viewers new approaches and bold artistic experiments.
Among the young artists, Erik Kulmanov stood out in particular. He has managed to develop his own style, skillfully playing with textures and surfaces. His works impress with their lightness, achieved through minimal layering of brushstrokes and the thoughtful use of empty space on the canvas. These unused areas become part of the composition, seamlessly complementing the main image and creating a cohesive work of art.
Particular attention was drawn to pieces that visually resembled the works of renowned artist Zorikto Dorzhiev. From a distance, they seemed to be his creations, but upon closer inspection, it became clear: this was merely a borrowing of style and imagery. The question remains whether this was a conscious imitation or an attempt at plagiarism. Each viewer will decide for themselves how to interpret such situations.
The 10th Tashkent International Biennale of Contemporary Art will be remembered as a significant and engaging event. It brought together artists with diverse approaches, styles, and techniques, allowing viewers to see contemporary art in many of its forms. This event provided a great opportunity to discover new names and ideas.
